The first book of a multi-volume history of the Clan MacKinnon. The Small Regiment, volume 1, The Origins of the Clan MacKinnon, is a new well researched history of the MacKinnon Clan to the year 1621. The book is a well illustrated 398 page volume with 25 maps, 27 photographs, 8 family charts and several drawings. There are informative end notes at the end of each chapter giving the references used and providing explanatory information that enhances the main text of each chapter. The 58 page appendix is composed of copies of original documents, contemporary stories and poetry that give a sense of the politics and culture during the periods described. History, to be understood, must be more than a collection of disconnected poorly explained anecdotes. A credible history of a Hebredian clan must explain the relationships between the island clans, their alliances and something of their culture. A good history must also discuss the pressure on the clans that was exerted by the kings of Scotland as they sought to incorporate the Hebrides into the Kingdom of Scotland. -The Small Regiment, volume 1, The Origins of the Clan MacKinnon, begins the story with a description of the great Celtic migrations, the settlement of Dalriada and founding of the monastery on Iona. -The age of the Vikings is discussed over 3 chapters. The loyalties of the Island leaders during the struggle between the kingdoms of Norway and Scotland is examined. -The 4 chapters relating the story of the Lordship of the Isles explain the flowering of a confident, independent Gaelic kingdom. The high standing and respect given to the MacKinnon chiefs during the Lordship is highlighted by contemporary stories. This is the period during which the MacKinnons came to possess their lands on Mull and Skye. - The tragic fall of the Lordship of the Isles and the heroic attempts by the island clans to defend it, is told over several chapters. We explore the changing loyalties, alliances, and altitudes of the Hebridean clans in the face of violent Scottish and English politics. - A struggle for survival grips the Hebrides as the clans adapt to new political reality. The kingdom of Scotland tries to increase its grasp on an island culture which prefers independence. - Finally the story of how and why the island clans developed a new relationship with the treacherous Scottish kingdom is told The Small Regiment, volume 1, Origins of the Clan MacKinnon, is suitable for everyone with an interest in the Clan MacKinnon or Hebridean history. This is not simply another history of Scotland with a Lowland or English bias. Every effort was made to maintain a MacKinnon focus and an Hebridean prospective. There is enough information regarding sources that interested readers may easily continue this fascinating research. It is the authors hope that others advance our history and expand out knowledge of Hebridean culture.

Here under this modest title is a remarkable history which must represent years of research. For all those with an interest in Clan Fingon here is the best and most definitive history of the clan ever written. With the promise of two volumes to come all those with a strong interest will be thrice served. This is a pioneering text that establishes a firm chronology and through extensive chapter notes and a detailed appendix creates a base line for work that may follow.

I feel parsimonious in giving the work a four star rating rather than five. I offer two reasons for this shortfall.

The first has absolutely nothing to do with the authors skill and what they have provided but the way in which the work is presented. As the first comprehensive book on the history of Clan MacKinnon for well over a hundred years and given that the principal author is the official clan historian it seems reasonable to assume that publication would have been assisted by a generous grant from Clan MacKinnon Society that would have given buyers the option to purchase a hard bound copy printed on high quality paper. If it takes another hundred years before another history is written unlike its 1899 predecessor this publication will have long since fallen apart. Why was not more money spent on publishing the book in a form that matches the quality of the content? Surely this will be done.

My second critical point is perhaps even more miserly. This competent and fascinating work has all the marks of a marvellous but in places naïve work. The maps do their job but do not appear to have been prepared by a professional cartographer. Not all the names of places mentioned in the text appear in the right place. The photographs framed in the round on poor quality paper do not do justice to the trouble taken over their selection. Source material always fairly reported and balanced as much as possible with alternative accounts is rarely subject to critical textual analysis and the reliability of source interpretations go unquestioned. History is written by the victor rather than the victim. I thought that in some cases a more assertive approach could have been taken. With the intervention of an experience professional editor a work might have emerged that made the absolute most of this most excellent research in a more engaging manner.

Having said all this in all honesty I cannot think of anybody as well informed and competent to have undertaken this praiseworthy research and produced this fine publication for which I am deeply grateful. I'm sure many people will like me welcome the appearance of this history with gratitude and enjoy learning all that it has to teach us about the complex and often fraught history of a time when clans ruled the Scottish Highlands and Islands. For all who carry the name McKinnon it is a special treat.
